I am trying to catch up on movies from 2018, I still have The Predator, Mission Impossible Fallout and the Spider-verse movie. I will get to Mission Impossible and the Predator, but Spider-man will have to wait. Why? Well, I don’t get to the theater too much and Aquaman takes precedents over Spider-man. I am really looking forward to Spider-man, looks like fun and visually stunning, not to mention I have heard many good things about the film.
But, I did finally, after 6 long days of waiting, get to see Aquaman. It really wasn’t much of a wait, but for a fan of DC comic properties and comic movies in general. So, I took my son and we sat back ready to see what kind of movie Aquaman would be.
I am a fan of the DCEU movies, all of them and in the beginning I had my doubts about an Aquaman movie. The DCEU has been full of mis-steps and I did worry. After the first couple of trailers, I was excited, even if Aquaman is one of DC heroes I knew little about. He showed up once in a while during runs of the Justice League in the 1990s and of course he was in Justice League Unlimited and Batman Brave and the Bold, Smallville and I did read Throne of Atlanis, which was a DC comics crossover event with the Justice League comic during the New 52. That is my knowledge of Aquaman. So, when Jason Momoa was cast, I was confused, but I really loved what he did with the character in the Justice League film and I was excited to see it expanded upon in a stand alone movie.
Once home to the most advanced civilization on Earth, the city of Atlantis is now an underwater kingdom ruled by the power-hungry King Orm. With a vast army at his disposal, Orm plans to conquer the remaining oceanic people — and then the surface world. Standing in his way is Aquaman, Orm’s half-human, half-Atlantean brother and true heir to the throne. With help from royal counselor Vulko, Aquaman must retrieve the legendary Trident of Atlan and embrace his destiny as protector of the deep.
The movie is very pretty and visually stunning. I was very happy to see the bulk of the film took place under the sea, rather than on land. But there is a fair share on land and it didn’t feel like just a reason to make shooting the film easier. Everything under water was so cool to see, a visual delight and some of the things I worried about, like dialog were not an issue.
Visual effects were very good, acting and casting were very good. Was there anything I didn’t like, not really. Jason Momoa continued what he did in Justice League, and expanded on the character. His relationship with Amber Heard’s Mera was really great and she kicked so much ass. The action was top notch, I mean the way James Wan shot this movie, especially the chase scene in Sicily. I would say that was the highlight of the movie, but there were many highlights, including the end of the movie.
I was very happy they were able to seamlessly integrate two major villains into one film without making it seem like too much. I was very happy to see an early introduction of Black Manta and for him to show back up a couple of times in the movie was killer. The actor to play Black Manta was great, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II could be a big player in future DCEU movies, if there ever is a Legion of Doom film, which was kind of set up at the end of Justice League. They could even toss him into a Suicide Squad movie. The point is, I wanna see more Black Manta. Black Manta is interesting enough, to maybe have his own movie.
Overall, this was a great step in the right direction. Wonder Woman was a big step for DC, but there were so many issues with the Justice League movie overall, I mean, we should get a chance to see the “Snyder Cut”, but probably wont. The DCEU keeps changing course even after Wonder Woman’s success. I hope it continues to take steps forward, I only mean this in a critical sense. I am happy with what we have seen so far. A few poor casting decisions aside, Jesse Eisenberg. Stop teasing us with Batman and Deathstroke. Make these movies, us Aquaman and Wonder Woman as good examples of what people want to see. Aquaman was a non-stop adventure that looked like what an Aquaman movie should look like. Batman is dark and Gotham is a scary place. The rest of the DCEU can be more than dark and gritty, Aquaman showed us the potential of what the DCEU could be and as much as it pains me to say, Zack Snyder needs to stay far away from these films. I once thought he was the right man for the job for Superman, while I like the Man of Steel, he did things poorly overall.
Aquaman delivers. It is heading over 600 million in less than a week, that is great and I would love to see it hit 1 billion before it leaves the theaters. We will see. I look forward to more in the future, but lets get a move on. Shazam is the only DCEU movie coming in 2019, there should be at least 2 or 3. We deserves good movies like this and to see more of our heroes taken good care of.
Oh, James Wan needs to direct a Star Wars film…I base this on how wonderful Aquaman is and the underwater scenes were as visually stunning as some of the epic space battles in a galaxy far far away.
