Music Monday – Song Covers, Better than Original?

While Artist Jane Bush is out today, I figured I could jump in and do a little post I have been thinking about for a while.  So many songs have been covered over the years and these are some that stick out to me.  I could be wrong, but here are five good ones, I’ll throw the original and then the cover.

Tell me what you think, is the original better, or do you like the cover better?

Killn Me Softly – Roberta Flack/The Fugees

To me, this is a great song either way.  But the Fugees took Roberta Flack’s classic song and made it their own.  I just love Lauryn Hill’s voice so much.

Live and Let Die – Wings/Guns N’ Roses

This one is tough for me.  Live and Let Die is one of my favorite Bond movies ever, but if you take the Wings version off the top of the movie, add the Guns N Roses version, wow.

No Ordinary Love – Sade/Deftones

I bet you thought I could make one list without mentioning the Deftones.  Well this song was on a single for Change(in the house of Flies) and it ended up on the B sides and rarities album released later.  Sade has such a lovely voice, but Chino and the Deftones do it so good.

Mad World – Tears for Fears/Gary Jules

I originally heard this song at the end of the movie Donnie Darko.  It became a song that was heard so many times for me.  Then in 2005, I heard this song pop up in the Gears of War trailer and it was perfection.  The Tears for Fears version, just does not have the same feeling to the song, it is totally 80s.  To me Mad World is terrible without Gary Jules.

Hurt – Nine Inch Nails/Johnny Cash

This one is a no brainer to me.  Johnny Cash takes this turd from Nine Inch Nails and makes is gold.  But really lyrically this song is terrific, but the NIN version is week and again, it has no feeling to it at all.  When Johnny Cash sings the song, you feel like he actually wrote the song, possibly about his struggles throughout his career.  When I first heard his version, it hit me, it is so powerful.

What do you think, am I wrong about these songs?  What are some of your favorite song covers that you think are better than the original?
