This article was written in 2012 for Nightfall Unlimited, now, I resurrect. This is before Disney not the most powerful. These are the top 10 Sith Lords.
Asajj Ventress – She is not a Sith, She claims this to Count Dooku, but he deny’s her. She is a Nightsister and while working for the Sith, she is nothing more than one of Count Dooku’s Dark Acolyte. Remember one thing while she was alive, Darth Sidious and Count Dooku were the only Sith, the Rule of Two was in place.
General Grievous -He is no force power, his cybernetcis allow him to weild the lightsabers. He has been trained by Count Dooku to use the lightsaber, but again he has no force power and if he did, same as Ventress the Rule of Two keeps him out.
Galen Marek(Starkiller) – If your not familiar with him, he is the main character from the Force Unleashed games. He is extremely powerful, but he is no Sith. He is Darth Vaders secret apprentice and eventually uses the light side of the force. So again, Rule of Two was in place and he is NOT a Sith.
Now to the countdown. As I have mentioned in all of my Top 10 lists, this is my opinion and nothing can sway the way I feel. I have read a lot of Star Wars books, comics and I have seen all of the films and anything animated. There are some characters I may not be familiar with and I am sure some of the Sith I picked you may or may not know. So let’s begin with the countdown.
10. Darth Sion (Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords)
The Lord of Pain, he was a Sith Lord who lived in the time of the Old Sith Wars. He is one of the Sith in the sequel to one of the best Star Wars games ever. One of my favorite things about the character, his body is fractured and decomposing, but held together by the dark side of the Force.
In the game he really does not seem like a threat, but knowing he fought for Exar Kun makes him very cool in my book. Plus as I explained before he is being held together by the power of the dark side, how cool is that. I wish there was more about this character. He is mentioned in different books and comics and you can use a Darth Sion skin in the Force Unleashed video game.
I would love to see Dark Horse drum up some back story about him leading towards the second KOTOR game. I know when you look him up on Wookieepedia there is some back story. But maybe a one shot comic or a graphic novel. There were rumors when John Jackson Miller was writing the comic Knights of the Old Republic, Lucien Draay was entended to inface be Darth Sion. This is what is said on Wookieepedia the Sith Acolye Haazen prophesied that the Jedi Gurdian Lucien Draay would teach Haazen’s new Sith, suggesting “Darth Sion” as a possible name he could take; Haazen was later defeated and Draay turned away from the path of the Lord of Pain. But to this date there is no truth to that and now it is off of Wookieepedia. Personally, that would be cool, I did like Lucien Draay.
9. Darth Talon (Star Wars: Legacy)
When promotional art came out for Star Wars Legacy in 2006, everybody only cared about one piece of art, Darth Talon. She is by far the sexiest Sith created and probably one of the deadliest. It was great to finally get to see a young female and very strong Sith. She turned out to be a pretty cool character in the legendary Legacy series writen by John Ostrander.
Her unbreakable loyalty for Darth Krayt helped her to be named Darth Talon, one of his two Hands This made her an extension of Krayts own will. In this position, Darth Talon found herself working alongside her Hand counterpart, Darth Nihl. Darth Talon was often given her Master’s most important missions, including the capture of the bounty hunter Cade Skywalker. Darth Talon eventually became a Sith Master when she was assigned to train Cade Skywalker in the ways of the dark side of the Force. Her stint as a master did not last long when her apprentice renounced the One Sith. Darth Talon was injured during Cade Skywalker’s escape. She did survive but her position in the eyes of her own Master had been severely threatened.
Throughout the 50 issues of Legacy, it was always a welcome sight to see her in the pages. She was drawn to perfection by one of the most gifted artist Jan Dursema. The team of Ostrander and Dursema is a dream team and I will read anything they create. Darth Talon is a welcome to the Expanded Universe and a lot of women try to costume as her and it is also great. Just wanted to add that.
8. Count Dooku aka Darth Tyranus (Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith and Clone Wars)
Count Dooku is the Jedi Master who was once the Padawan Learner of Yoda and eventually fell to the Dark Side of the Force. After his fall be became the apprentice of Darth Sidious and pretty much the face of Confederacy of Independent Systems and some thought he was the Dark Lord of the Sith, this comes from the Republic comics from Dark Horse.
Of course most people know Count Dooku from the movies for the fantastic anitmated Clone Wars series. In the movies he is played by Dracula himself, Christopher Lee. Christopher Lee is my favorite actor and imagine how happy I was when I read he would be in Star Wars as a bad guy. I was pretty stoked and he was not on screen for much, he really did leave his place in the Star Wars universe for sure.
He was set up pretty cool, like I said the apprentice of Yoda, he was also the master of one of the coolest Jedi, Qui-Gonn Jinn. He was also pretty cool with his recruiting, when he fell he was able to bring many Jedi with him to support his cause. Not to mention some of the cooler characters in the comics, animationa and film. I am talking about Jango Fett, Durge, Asajj Ventress and of course General Grievous.
The only thing I never understood, did he know Darth Sidious and Palpatine were the same person? I would say yes, but everytime they speak, Palpatine always concealed his identity.
7. Darth Krayt (Star Wars: Legacy)
Well one of his Hands made the list so of course the big daddy Sith Lord of the One Sith. He brought the Sith together as one a killed Darth Bane’s Rule of Two. For this Darth Bane called him a pretender, it was funny. I really like who they made Darth Krayt and even though I love to play spoiler I will not spoil who he is. But I will say you have to have read alot of the Star Wars comics to know who is the man that became Darth Krayt.
One of the cooler things is Ostrander talking about the past Sith mistake, namely Palpatine. The characters complete arc is pretty great, he is trying to heal himself through out the story. Ok I will throw one spoiler, he is betrayed to his death by his basically number 2 Sith Darth Wyyrlok. That did not stop him, he spent time in his stasis chamber and came with a vengeance.
This is another one I really enjoyed reading. Again the creative team of Ostrander and Duursem went above and beyond. I am not sure if they are fans or just fantstic at research. But they really make these characters fit into the universe very well.
Darth Krayt belongs on this list and should be on most Top 10 Sith lists. He was the Dark Lord of the Sith and he tried to be inovative in the Sith ways, as most were.
6. Darth Maul (Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, The Clone Wars)
It is 1999, my love for Star Wars was growing and growing. We finally were going to see a new Star Wars film after 16 years, even though we did see the Original Trilogy two years earlier. When I first saw Darth Maul in action, I was blown away. I had never seen anyone use a double bladed lightsaber and fight in the style he did. It was amazing to me and I remember watching the fight, the Duel of the Fates over and over on video.
I don’t know if everyone knows much about Darth Maul, he was a disposible villain. In the Star Wars films there are a bunch of villains we only see for one film and unfortunatly Darth Maul is that. He was barely in the film but really stuck with everyone. He was popular enough for the Clone Wars to bring him back to life last season, again the Dark Side of the Force keeping him alive.
One thing that kind of bothers me, originally his origin was growing up a Sith being trained nearly from birth to be Sith by Palpatine. But I think the Clone Wars series changed that and made him from Dathomir. I am not sure but I am happy we got to see his “brother” Savage Opress.
5. Exar Kun (Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi)
I discovered this character in 1997, I was reading the Ultimate Guide to Star Wars characters and I saw his name. There were pictures from comic books and one of him using two lightsabers and even a double bladed. I read his write and thought he was pretty much the man.
He was rash and arrogant, Exar Kun was had strong ambition, wanted to become a great Jedi Master. Exar Kun developed an interest in the forbidden teachings of the Sith, becoming frustrated and angry with his master and feeling that he was being held back. He was seeking to prove his worth and his hunger for knowledge grew. In his arrogance, Exar Kun believed himself immune to the pull of the Dark side of the Force. He did demonstrate a strong resistance to the Dark side.
He is very interesting to read, if you can get copies of the Tales of the Jedi Graphic Novels do yourself a favor and read them. They are fantastic and take place before Knights of the Old Republic.
4. Darth Revan (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic)
If you are a Star Wars fan and reading this post, I hope by now you have played one of the best Star Wars games ever made. In the game you play a character and all you hear about is Darth Revan, spoiler alert, it turns out you are Revan. I know, I know I messed up the big plot twist in the story, but come on people, the game is nearly 10 years old.
He appeared also in the comic Knights of the Old Republic, but as a Jedi and they called him the Revanchist. His apprentice, Darth Malak betrayed him and left Revan for dead. Malak wanted the power that Revan held. Revan was not dead, his mind was left shattered, his memories scattered, and soon thought dead by the galaxy, Revan’s life was preserved by Bastila Shan, an act that forged a Force bond between them. They would join forces to try and stop Malak from locating the Star Forge. They were successful and also disposed of Darth Malak.
Eventually Revan was redeemed and again became a Jedi Master. Revan was revered and remembered as a very powerful Force user in galactic history. Many learnt off of his teachings and his actions; Darth Bane basing his philosophies and rules over many things done by Revan.
3. Emperor Palpatine aka Darth Sidious (Star Wars Saga)
Who thought Palpy was going to be number 1? Originally I thought about it, but there is a far great Sith than Palpatine. He might have been the great deciever but not the number 1 Sith. I think everyone knows his story so I will keep it short.
He was a Senator from the planet Naboo and worked his way through the ranks, playing the Master of Puppets the enitre way. He played both sides during the Clone Wars as the leader of the Republic and the defacto leader of the Confederacy. He used Darth Maul and Count Dooku as apperentices until his final prize, Anakin Skywalker. When he converted Anakin to Darth Vader, the killed off nearly every Jedi to wipe out any threat. But Anakin had son children who rose up against Palpatines Empire and destroyed the entire Empire.
He is a great character to watch from his creepy smile to when he says, “Good”. I don’t know why I like that so much, I just do. I really enjoyed watching him in Return of the Jedi and always wanted more. I also wondered why he was so powerful. We saw what he could do and how everything went down in Revenge of the Sith. Palpatine is great.
2. Darth Vader (Star Wars Saga)
I don’t care who you are, everyone has heard of Darth Vader. Everyone knows about the man in the black suit with a cape and a red “laser sword”. But to we Star Wars fan boys he is much more, regardless of what anyone say he is the reason Star Wars is popular. Sure the story is great there are alot a cool characters, but Darth Vader is legenary.
Most of us know he was once Anakin Skywalker, then Palpatine helped send him over the edge and he joined the Dark Side of the Force. After becoming the man in the suit, he was ordered by Palpatine to whip out the Jedi and he went to the edge of the galaxy lookinf for Jedi and killing whoever he found. Then Luke Skywalker came around and Vader became obessed because he knew it was his son. In the end Vader killed Palpatine and was redeemed in the Force.
I had trouble with placing him on the countdown. I do think he could easily be the #1 Sith on my list but iis not. I love to watch Empire Strikes Back and watch him fight Luke Skywalker one handed and the use the Force to through things at Luke. I am so happy Dark Horse comics uses Darth Vader to this day and he also showed up in the Force Unleashed games.
1. Darth Bane (The Darth Bane Book Trilogy)
Unless you are a big Star Wars fan, you may not know Darth Bane. He is pretty much as bad as they come. He is also the creator of the smartest Sith rule ever. In a time where there were a lot of Sith he studie the Sith holocron of Darth Revan. He used the knowledge to destroy the Brotherhood of Darkness. He then instituted a Rule of Two, which stated that there could be only two Sith to avoid the infighting that had plagued the Sith for millennia. He also took both the title of Darth and an apprentice named Darth Zannah.
Over time he began to worry that his apperntice apprentice was too weak to overthrow him and assume the mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith, as was necessary under the Rule of Two. Later he and Darth Zannah engaged fateful duel that resulted in the death of the Bane and Zannah claiming the title of Dark Lord.
The Rule of Two states that there would be only two Sith at one time, a Master and an Apprentice, guaranteeing that when the Apprentice becomes powerful enough in the ways of the Dark Side to take the title of Master, only then would they be worthy of the title. This transfer of power would only take place when the Apprentice takes their Master’s life and finds a worthy student to repeat the cycle. Both Master and Apprentice were considered to be Sith Lords. It lasted intil Darth Krayt changed everything instituting the One Sith. His revision of the Sith was met with extreme disapproval and outrage, particularly from the gatekeeper of Darth Bane’s holocron. When Krayt sought the wisdom of the ancient Sith Lords, they rebuffed him as an offensive heretic and a false Sith. Darth Bane called Darth Krayt a pretender.
So that is the list, I hope you enjoyed. It was tough to figure the order. All of these sith are very worthy, even Bane has never been on screen his books are great. Give them a read, Darth Bane: Path of Destruction is the first, the second is call The Rule of Two and the final book is Dynasty of Evil.
Check out all of these books, video games, comics and movies. Star Wars is great and the bad guys are equally great.
