Rayzor’s Review: Star Wars Thrawn Trilogy

So, what happened after Return of the Jedi?  We will soon find out with the release of the long awaited Star Wars Episode VII.  This is something we didn’t think would ever happen.  Before Disney bought Lucasfilm and Star Wars we did know the answer.  Timothy Zahn wrote, what some consider the definitive follow up to Return of the Jedi.  So, the question, does it hold up and how do I feel about what is know as the Thrawn Trilogy?

Does this story hold up, I will say no.  Not at all.  I hadn’t read the books in many years.  I decided to read the graphic novels this time and I have to say it was a disappointment.  Back when the stories were released, it was a real hot item for Star Wars fans.  There are certain elements, mostly characters that make the story good.  The story is well written, but it pales in comparison to most of the Star Wars books released after.  The best thing, the Thrawn trilogy was a great spring board for the rest of the expanded universe.

I of course originally read the books back in the mid-1990s and it was my introduction into the expanded universe.  Actually, Shadows of the Empire was my first Expanded Universe trek.  I was very impressed with this story and so happy to read what happened to all of our favorite characters and the Empire itself.

So, the best part of the Thrawn Trilogy?

The introduction of two characters, there are so many introduced.  There are two that stick out in everyone’s mind.

Grand Admiral Thrawn

ThrawnHe is a cunning and intelligent commander of the former Empire.  He begins to gather his Imperial forces for a strategic attack on the New Republic with the help of Joruus C’baoth.  The Chiss are so cool and it really sucks they are not a part of the new Star Wars universe, well as far as we know.

This is my personal…writings, I love the look of the Chiss and I based a character I wrote off of Thrawn and his race, the Chiss.

I have read that Thrawn returned in another series and from the dead.  I do not want to disturb my vision of this powerful character with that nonsense.  Thrawn kickstarted the Expanded Universe and is a fan favorite and for good reason.  Read the Thrawn trilogy to meet and enjoy this character.

Mara Jade

Mara-sacrificeI do not need to tell anyone who Mara Jade is, do I?  Well, at first she worked for the Emperor and was sent to kill Luke Skywalker.  In the Thrawn trilogy she comes close, but eventually becomes an alley within the story.  Spoiler!  Luke gets his lightsaber from Empire Strikes back and gives it to Mara Jade.

I think this is common knowledge, Mara eventually becomes a Jedi and Luke Skywalkers wife.  Other than the big three, she is one of the most important characters in the Expanded Universe.  She makes if pretty far and she eve appears in the great Star Wars Dark horse comic, Legacy.

Mara Jade is a great character and she is written well in the Thrawn trilogy and to me, the most intriguing character in the story itself.  So, there you go another reason to read Thrawn trilogy.

The verdict stands, this books were great and I do not think they even compare to the films or would be a worthy sequel to the original trilogy.  As I said, it is outdated, but I would go ahead and read the series, especially the awesome comics or trades.  Check the links below to buy.
