Rayzor’s Review: Green Lantern Rebirth

GreenLantern-Rebirth

It is time for another retro comic book review.  Since we talked about the Flash Rebirth, why not Green Lantern’s Rebirth.  This is another 6-issue book that brings back an older character who either moved on or died.  Green Lantern Rebirth was released at the end of 2004 and finished in 2005, which was perfect timing with Infinite Crisis coming very soon.  Hal Jordan was the first Green Lantern, well other than Alan Scott who is a different kind of Green Lantern all together.  But most friends of mine, when you say Green Lantern, most say Hal Jordan.  Not that there is anything wrong with John Stewart, Guy Gardner or Kyle Rayner.  It is that same old situation, I grew up with Wally West, but Barry Allen is the most well known Flash.  Hal Jordan is best know as the Green Lantern.

When this story starts, Kyle Rayner is on patrol and he hears, “Parallax is coming”.  This should get anyone who is a fan stoked.  When Hal Jordan went bad, he was possessed by Parallax.  At this stage of the Green Lantern universe, Kyle is a Green Lantern, John Stewart is as well, but Hal Jordan is working at the Spectre, while my favorite, Guy Gardner is working as Warrior.

Green-Lantern-Guy-GardnerA lot of different and strange things happen, Guy Gardner goes haywire and Coast City, which at this point is long destroyed, appears.  Strange right?  Eventually Guy Gardner gets the ring that Hal Jordan gave to Green Arrow if he ever needed it and it revives him.  This was one of the coolest parts of the book for me.  I did not like what happened to Guy over the years.  He is my favorite of the Green Lanterns and he is back.  I was happy to see this, he eventually got a follow up book, Green Lantern Corps, it pretty much followed Guy Gardner, Killowog and Kyle Rayner.

There is so much that happens in this book and I will recommend this.  It is amazing and the beginning to an all new era for the Green Lantern Corps.  After this was released, Hal Jordan got the lead title, Green Lantern and then of course the Green Lantern Corps which follows all of the other Corps member.  This all leads up to some of the most amazing comic book events that have happened and I will list them all below.

Before the New 52, this was by far the second best comic line DC comics had running, I say second, because of Batman.  It reached the peak with the Blackest Night and shortly after the War of the Green Lanterns.  With that, the New 52 game barreling in and while the older chronology is still there, the New 52 is a little off.  Especially after Geoff Johns steps away after around 18 issues.  But Rebirth kicks it off, the Sinestro Corps War, Rage of the Red Lanterns and the Blackest Night.  This was the beginning of bringing in the Sinestro Corps, Red Lanterns(personal favorite), Indigo Tribe, Larfleeze the Agent Orange, the Blue Lanterns, the Star Sapphires and of course the Black Lanterns and the White Lantern.  The epic run lasted about 7 or 8 years.

Here are some other preferred readings about the Green Lantern.  There are a lot, so try and keep up. Click on the picture and it will send you to Amazon and buy these books!  Not to mention Christmas is coming and these would make perfect gifts for anyone who love comics.
